De jaren ‘60: Robert Heath is één van de meest gerenommeerde neurologen ter wereld. In zijn onderzoek naar diepe hersenstimulatie werden elektroden in het brein gebruikt om gevoelens van geluk te stimuleren en negatieve emoties te onderdrukken. Zijn methodes bleken echter te controversieel en betekende het einde van zijn reputatie. Decennia later, nu psychologische problemen als depressies en angststoornissen steeds vaker voorkomen, onderzoeken wetenschappers opnieuw de mogelijkheden van deep brain stimulation. Succes wordt geboekt, maar oude ethische dilemma’s keren terug als een geest uit het verleden. Zijn draadjes in onze hersenen de sleutel tot geluk in de toekomst?

Nowadays, more and more people are being diagnosed with a mental disease. Science may now have found the solution for the likes of depression, Tourette and various compulsive disorders: Deep Brain Stimulation. With the help of electrodes in the brain a feeling of happiness might be activated or negative emotions could be suppressed. The question remains whether this is an ethical practice as the possibility to change peoples personality is seemingly becoming a reality. In this documentary both scientists and patients talk about their experience with the controversial treatment.

Introduction by Kasper Spoelstra

Kasper Spoelstra is a PhD student in the field of Quantitative Neuroscience in the Dimphna Meijer lab, focusing on the molecular mechanisms that neurons (brain cells) use to establish connections and which drive our ability to think, remember, and coordinate our actions.

InScience Festival

InScience is one of the largest science film festivals in Europe, and unique to The Netherlands. The festival is aimed at the intersection between film, science and society. The programme consists of science films, debates and an educational programme for children and youth. The sixth edition of the festival takes place between 11 and 15 november in and around LUX Nijmegen.

Van 11-15 november 2020 vindt de zesde editie van InScience – International Science Film Festival Nijmegen plaats. InScience is hét festival in Nederland voor de wetenschapsfilm. Samen met Studium Generale TU Delft en Bèta Balie Delft brengen we drie van de mooiste films naar het theater. De films worden begeleid door verdiepende lezingen van, en gesprekken met wetenschappers van TU Delft. De films en de lezingen zijn Engelstalig.
